Much has been written recently about the dangers of using essential oils with cats. For 13 years I have been using essential oils, hydrosols and herbal oils with cats, in my practice of animal aromatherapy. In this time I have helped many troubled felines to a healthier, happier lifestyle with no harmful side-effects.
Angelica root is my number one oil, I love the fragrance and I love the oil's healing power. The fragrance is earthy and sweet, sharp and penetrative, with a touch of spice and a hint of green, plus a musky, river bottom undertone. The complexity of its bouquet tells us that Angelica root has a wide range of actions and connects with all 5 elements.
Anger! Just the very word can create a negative impact on us emotionally. Humans are taught to control the natural expression of anger from an early age and for most of us it is a more or less successful effort for the rest of our lives. We try and avoid things that will make us feel angry, and when we feel angry we suppress or deny it, or blame it on the thing that made us angry in the first place. But have you ever asked yourself, what anger is? From where does it arise? If it is so bad why does it exist in the first place?
Stress is a word so commonly used these days that we have lost sight of what it actually means. Many times clients are surprised when I explain that their horse is suffering from stress and that without relieving the stress I will not be able to heal it, just prop it up.
Essential oils can be helpful on three levels in the presence of viruses and bacteria:
1. Many oils are anti-viral and anti bactericidal, among them Manuka, Tea tree, Bergamot, Ravensara and Eucalyptus.n Eucalyptus globulus and Bergamot in particular kill airborne bacteria.
2. Essential oils are often immuno-stimulant so they can help the body fight off an infection and viruses have no place to make their home if the immune system is strong.
Essential oils are an effective and gentle answer to many of today’s common equine problems and although not an alternative to proper veterinary care, they can often bring relief where allopathic medicines hold no answer. Chronic skin conditions, allergies, arthritis, Cushing’s Syndrome, stress related conditions and behavioral problems are just a few of the conditions that respond to essential oils.
Essential oils and hydrosols can be used for horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs... in fact any animal. These aromatic extracts are an effective and gentle answer to many of today's common health and behaviour problems, often bringing relief where conventional medicine holds no answer. Chronic skin conditions, allergies, arthritis, sarcoids, Cushing's Syndrome, chronic stress and behaviour problems are just a few of the conditions that have responded well to treatment with oils.
Aromatherapy for dogs? Does the concept conjure up images of poodles in beauty parlours, relaxing to soothing music and having a facial? Because aromatherapy has been so over-marketed as a ‘beauty aid’ in this country the idea of using essential oils to heal animals can seem very strange. Actually, it is one of the most logical and sensible ways to help our pets be healthy and happy; it is also easy to learn the basic principles of Essential Oil Therapy for Animals so you can use it safely on your own animals.
